What type of music?  It’s the Big Apple meets the Motor City. A champion and an underdog rolled into one. A ton of hustle and zero ounces of quit. Stylistically, raw, soulful, pop rock with influences from Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, The White Stripes, John Mayer and other artists known for embracing the history of music while molding it into something new.

When did you first start? We formed in January of 2014 in NYC and started performing in March of 2014 in NYC before relocating to Detroit area in May of 2014 and performing extensively in the metro Detroit area. Leona is a NYC native, and Brion was living in Brooklyn at the time and performing as a solo musician in support of his latest album.

Why did you decide to start it? We sang a song together and had an instant musical connection. Leona had never written music before and Brion encouraged her to write one “to throw away”. After the song was finished, they both liked it, and knew they were on to something. Now they’ve released 2 EPs and are working on a full length album. Brion had previously released several full length albums and EPs, won the 2012 HATCH Groundbreaker award, scored several films and co-wrote with other artists. He also worked with Dean Dinning (of Toad The Wet Sprocket) and Phil Solem (of The Rembrandts) on his last album. But the musical and creative vibe was so strong between he and Leona that he decided to put that all on hold to pursue this band as his main project.

Are you a solo Artist or part of group? Leona and Brion write all the music and perform as a duo, but we are also a full band at our larger shows.

What name do you go by?  Barelyon (pronounced: Barely On)

How did you come up with the name? Magic 😉

Who do you like to collaborate with? We collaborate with a lot of different musicians in metro Detroit. We love sharing the stage with The Gravity Club and The Old Adage. We also love performing live with Dave McConnell, Randy Hambright, Chad Soucie, Joel Rydecki, Mike Galbraith, and many others. When we have time, we love stopping by Brian Miller’s open mike at New Way Bar and Audra Kubat’s at Union Street. Two of the best hosts out there.

Where do you play? We put on an original concert about every month or so. We’ve performed at PJ’s Lager House – Detroit, Paycheck’s Lounge – Hamtramck, Union Street – Detroit, New Way Bar – Ferndale, Trinity House Theatre – Livonia, House Of Beer – Ann Arbor, and many others. We also perform a mix of covers, and a few originals, all over the metro Detroit area 4-5 nights a week to pay the bills. We are regulars at O’Connor’s in Rochester, O’Callaghan’s in Plymouth, Prost Wine Bar in Frankenmuth, Goodnite Gracie in Royal Oak, Andiamo in Royal Oak, and Marlows in Brownstown (which we will be at tonight, July 8th from 8-midnight).

When are your upcoming shows? We have a festival called ‘Taste of Brighton’ this Saturday, July 11th. we are performing in downtown Brighton with our full band, from 6-7pm and also 8-9pm. We also will be at Plymouth Coffee Bean Co. with our friends, The Old Adage and Mike Galbraith, performing on Thursday, July 16th. That show starts at 8pm. All ages.
